Dr. Michael Poole treats more adenoid and tonsil patients than anyone combined

Michael D. "Mike" Poole is one of two dedicated pediatric otolaryngologist with Savannah Pediatric ENT. He joined Georgia Ear in 2005, leaving the University of Texas Medical School in Houston where he served as Professor and Chairman of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and as Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Prior to that he served as an associate professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Poole received his M.D. degree and completed his Otolaryngology residency at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) where he also completed a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology/Immunology. He received UNC's Kuno Award and the Leary Award: The top awards for research in each graduating medical school class. Dr. Poole attended Auburn University on an athletic scholarship (Basketball). 

Dr. Poole has a long standing clinical and research interest in ENT infections and issues related to antibiotic resistance. As the only ENT physician in the U.S. with a doctorate in microbiology, he is generally considered his specialty's top expert in antibiotic treatment of ENT infections, and he has authored or co-authored several national and international guidelines concerning treatment of sinus and ear infections. He also has a long-standing interest in sleep apnea and snoring, having authored the first ENT textbook chapters on pediatric sleep apnea. He has published over 100 articles, abstracts, and chapters; and he has delivered over 1000 invited lectures to national and international audiences. Dr. Poole has received awards for teaching students and residents at the Universities of Florida and Texas, as well as here in Savannah. He has been listed, since 2002, by Castle Connolly, Inc., as a "Top Doctor" in the U.S.; as one of "Best Doctors in America" by Best Doctors, Inc. (2003 - 2010), and is the only pediatric otolaryngologist recognized as a Best Doctor by Savannah Magazine. He has received the American Academy of Otolaryngology Distinguished Service Award and Honor Award.

Dr. Poole is a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, having spent 4 years on active duty, and 20 years in the Army Reserves. Drafted at the end of the Vietnam war, he graduated first in his Basic Training Battalion and in his Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) class. After airborne training he was an honor graduate in his Ranger class and subsequently served in the 82nd Airborne Division where he received the Ft. Bragg Outstanding Junior Officer Award. After he finished his medical training he served in various medical command and staff positions.

Dr. Poole's current interests include antibiotic resistance detection, computer databases, web-based information systems, and all things electronic. He resides on Dutch Island in Savannah, where he enjoys cycling and water activities.
